Product Description
All year long Lily and Liam look forward to Christmas on their grandparents’ farm. It’s always the perfect trip — walking to the lilac library, trimming the tree, giving gifts. But this year, thanks to a white cow alone in the meadow, things will be different. This Christmas, Lily and Liam will find out the meaning of a true gift.
From one of our most beloved authors comes a brand-new holiday classic that rings in the season by celebrating the joys of family, community, and true giving.
The True Gift: A Christmas Story

This is a great little story of the true meaning of Christmas and the love that a little boy has for one of the most often overlooked animals, the cow. I know when I see cows I primarily see a walking breathing version of my next hamburger or steak. Never stopping to realize the significance that ANY animal can have on a person. Which in itself really made me take a look at myself since I am such a HUGE love of cats. I just really never thought of a cow as a kind of pet, but if you were around them enough I can see where you would get attached to them.
This is a great children’s story that centers around the importance of having someone in your life so that you aren’t all alone and hence lonely and the true meaning of giving to improve someone’s or in this case, some cows life, and knowing that what is right, is right, no matter what the circumstances or what others may think.
In many ways, this book reminded me of the old Christmas cartoon, The Little Drummer Boy.

The True Gift: A Christmas Story
This is a heartwarming story of a brother and sister visiting their grandparents in the country at Christmas time. Every year Lilly and Liam come to visit, but this year is different because there is one lonely cow left in the pasture. As you read what they do for the cow, you will learn about truly caring and selfless giving.
“The True Gift” would be a great Christmas gift. It is easy reading for kids 8 and up, and adults will enjoy it too. Younger children will enjoy having this story read to them.

The True Gift: A Christmas Story
I ordered this book to give to my granddaughter. She is 8 and I was very pleased to find that she is the perfect age for this book, or perhaps the book is aimed perfectly at her! Inside the dust cover, it says the book is for ages 7 and up. Having read the book, I heartily agree.
This is a tale of selflessness and love. Probably the children in the book are a little too good, but there is nothing wrong with that, as we are trying to teach our children to get along with their siblings anyway.
The story deals with a lone cow, and people who know anything about cows know they are herd animals. The children want to get a friend for the lone cow for Christmas. How the children go about realizing their goal is where the selflessness and love come in.
This is a great story for the young, and there are a few very nicely done illustrations in the book. The book is 80 pages, fairly large print, just about right for the young reader, and every page counts. There is not a lot of superfluous material here, just what needs to be.
I can highly recommend this book for young readers.

The True Gift: A Christmas Story
Absolutely loved this latest book from the author of “Sarah Plain and Tall”.
A 30 minute read, this short chapter book is about a kind-hearted boy whose heart for animals impacts an entire town.
Highly, highly recommended Christmas tale,.

The True Gift: A Christmas Story
I shared this book with my two sons (ages 7 and 5) over the course of three nights as a bedtime reading. My children were touched by the story and immediately connected with the main characters, siblings Lily and Liam.
The book explores what makes a true gift and why it entails a degree of sacrifice. Liam is touched by the sadness of a lone white cow in his grandparents’ meadow. His actions at first upset his sister, Lily, who wants another idyllic (i.e. simple) Christmas holiday. As the story unfolds, Lily is inspired to help Liam fulfill his gift.
Perhaps, this book will someday be a classic; a gentle story that evokes a simpler time like Little House in the Big Woods while maintaining a timeless quality to which children can relate, whether they are raised in the city or in the countryside.
Rating: Five stars.
Last year, I reviewed several Christmas books for Amazon and was most impressed by Great Joy by Kate DiCamillo and An Orange for Frankie by Patricia Polacco. However, Patricia MacLachlan’s book rises above both of those books.
