The Gift You Are — John Denver

John talks about the birth of Jesse Belle during a trip to Japan and sings “The Gift You Are.” It’s moving to see how much her birth meant to him.

JD originally wrote this song after Jess was born- BUT in all his concerts he would always add that ALL of us are a gift “to each other”- that’s what he summed up by saying here in the intro to the song and what he would say is the true meaning of the song.

“Now when I wrote that song…” Can someone tell me what he said?

I wish all the children in the world could hear this song. All the mistreated, abused, lost and homeless children.

Love you John

I saw a PR photo of John in 1974. When Jessie accepted the Grammy for her dad after his death she put her head down and smiled her dad’s smile. Jesse is grown up now and she looks like her dad and the rest of his relatives. John kept a close relationship with Jesse and the reason was he is her real father.

Is that we he never sang the song again?

His eyes look so sad, even though his message is so positive. It is sad to me.

What?!!?
Where did you get that information?!!?
Did he tell you that?

My friend jj Ebaugh and jyoti Ulrich introduced me to John and we saw each other again in Rio at the Earth Summit. Unfortunately John had come to know that his baby Jessie was not his. his wife conceived a friend of John who was a ski instructor.
They were divorced shortly thereafter.
John was really devastated for about two years.

The name of the program was One World, One People at NK Hall near Tokyo … sponsored by my former company (ARC International) and video by NHK. We used a lot of John’s music in our seminars so the 5000 Japanese present were very familiar with this song.

Also, The Gift You Are was John’s poetic response to a seminar exercise he participated in during our program for the Windstar Foundation Board and staff.

I love this S? NG

Ah, so sweet! Beautiful song, beautiful man — oh how John loved his children.

Ten years after John’s unfortunate departure from us and I’m still discovering songs by him that are new to me, thanks to this medium! What a wonderful gift John continues to be!

Please let me know if she sees it and what she thinks!

This is some great footage!! I would would love to see this footage if my father wrote this song for me!! It is so touching!! He was a very talented man!!! Such a great voice!!!
I love all these old footages!!

JD loved all three of his kids more than life itself. They would all be moved by what people write about their dad. Despite having some questions for Jesse B.’s mom, I hope Jesse B. succeeds in her studies in Australia and along with the older two of JD’s children (all now adults) that they will always make JD proud and wish them the best.
