A Cockeyed Optimist – The Gift of Music London 2010

From Julie Andrews’ “The Gift of Music” Concert in London in the O2 Arena on 8/5/2010 PS. Sorry for the awkward transition in the middle – I stupidly stopped recording. Only an instrumental section is missing.

One of the many highlights of a wonderful evening!

Thank you so much for posting this video here. It’s like I am in a Julie’s concert! I read many reviews on this concert. Some were mean and degrading. But some are honest and good. Come on, to those who condemn this concert, please give Julie a break. She stated clearly that this is not a singing concert but a gift of music to her fans!

Love ya Julie!

It’s embarrassing. I mean she is off-pitch most of the time and maybe hits the notes 2/5ths of the time. Good try, Julie…but I think you should know when toleave the party. You should just rest on your past laurels.

She was never supposed to sing again so it was a joy to see her on stage again. This is absolutely beautiful and I like her will cherish that night

I am so glad to read the positive comments on this video. I was there and got really annoyed at the people leaving during the show. People who say they were decieved. Ha! She was completely honest about what this night was going to be a celebration of music led by her but not necessarily always focusing on her. What she participated in was magical and should be considered triumphant not tragic.

Thank you for posting this. I was too far away to record properly. My favourite song of the night!

From what I’ve seen it looks like she did a wonderful job, especially considering the problems from the surgery (and her age)! She doesn’t have the range she had before-but she did what she could. As for as the complaints about it being a rip-off because she herself didn’t sing enough, I saw in a video of the intro that she said the night was to celebrate MUSIC, not what SHE is/was able to do!
I have admired her since I was little-being there to see her live would have been a dream come true!

@cazziekins I can’t remember the order I posted them :p But it was: Getting to know you, There is nothing like a Dame, My Funny Valentine & A cockeyed optimist. She did sing more but I didn’t record all of them. I think I’ve seen them around, though I’m guessing you’ve probably found them already :)

I am more envious than you will ever know! Have you posted the songs featuring Jules in the order they were performed? Thanks soooo much for sharing ;o)))

Me too hun the ungrateful wretches!!

You could sooooooooo tell that she was getting frustrated that she couldn’t sing as much as she would have loved. My friend and I thought it was an amazing gift and couldn’t clap our hands hard enough to let her know how much we love and appreciate her. We got really annoyed with people leaving early, and we had a group of people behind us moaning all the time. So irritating!

OMG I dont have the right words express what I just heard. All I can say is that, that was AMAZING. It’s like she never had a problem with vocal chords. I am like literally in tears just watching this, i wasnt even there. For all those who saw Julie at the o2, i am so jealous of you right now. Unfortunately i heard that quite a few people actually walked out of the concert. Pleeez tell me it aint so, is so, I hope Julie didnt notice. It would have been such honor just to be there.

Quality Dame!

Last night was unbelievable and I will cherish those moments forever! I don’t know why people thought they would see a 20year-old Julie, but Julie had stated in interviews that ‘she does a few things too’, clearly implying that she is not singing throughout the concert. I think it’s probably the organisers fault. In the USA it was advertised as a concert put together by Julie, whereas in the UK they advertised it quite a lot as a Julie Andrews Concert. I’m just glad I’ve heard a legend sing!!!

que bueno oir a julie cantar de nuevo!
ojalá pudiera hacer este concierto en latinoamerica.
saludos desde asuncion, paraguay.

Yes, Julie told it many times before that her voice was no longer the same. The fans of her knows that. It’s not easy for her to hear other people singing her old songs and she knows that she can’t sing this anymore on this high level. I saw all the videos on youtube of the concert an i wish i could hear her voice live. I’m a fan from Germany and I wish she did a concert in Germany. For me is Julie the one and only.

This is a woman who was told she may never sing again and it’s the first time publicly since 1997 since she has sung in public give the woman a standing ovation not criticism…. walk out?? you have no class or good spirit in you for such a class act you witnessed history! fools.

julie said countless times that his voice was no longer the same. And still had people who were waiting to hear her singing like in time Mary Poppins.
come on guys! I don’t know English and knew it and hoped for a show at this level.
she was great!
You don’t know what bad show.

Thanks for posting this. I’m so proud of her for this and it almost brought tears to my eyes! Her voice has improved so much.
JayNXR and Jeromeroussel, I don’t understand what you guys are upset about. You both were very lucky to have witnessed that concert and I would have gladly taken your place.

We were there too and walked out during second part, lots of people did! Julie showed us disrespect last night by not making it special, just a copycat show of the american one, we paid £200 for 2 tickets! Never again!

jeromeroussel I was there too and found the whole thing extremely disappointing! It was not suited for a 25000 people concert hall but more for a theatre! She’s raking the money in and has lost my admiration. We had to walk out at the start of the second part, the pantomime bit…

The feeling last night was as if she had gathered her friends and family to share a special moment of hers .. .And I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else at that moment. She is more than special she is someone that I look up to, she is a true role model!

I was at the 02 arena last night aswell and it was a true honour to be part of that concert and a real rare thing to see Julie Andrews live in the flesh let alone singing live.

last night i couldn’t stop crying every time she sang anything xD. it was so amazing :’)/
